Family Entrepreneurs: The Next Generation of Beer

The journalism unit of Blue Chalk Media produced “Family Entrepreneurs” in collaboration with The New York Times video department and business desk. The six-part series celebrates a range of family-owned businesses across the United States—from taquerias to hand-sewn bowties, advanced technological helmets to breweries.
This episode, “The Next Generation of Beer,” is set at the headquarters of D.G. Yuengling & Sons, Inc., the oldest operating brewery in the United States, founded in 1829 and in the family for six generations. Dick Yuengling, Jr. bought the family business from his father in 1985, and in the intervening years, he has built the company into the largest privately-held brewery in America, producing 2.8 million barrels of beer in 2013.
After pursuing some divergent paths, all four of his daughters are now working alongside their dad in the family business. The sisters are determined to become the next generation leaders of Yuengling, an exciting challenge as it will be the first time that women lead the family business. However, Dick Yuengling, Jr., who is now 71, has no intention of retiring anytime soon—and he could very well work until 83, the quitting age for his grandfather, who headed Yuengling for 64 years.
“Family Entrepreneurs” is the second major initiative to come from the Blue Chalk journalism unit, designed to report and produce visual journalism with news organizations and knowledge brands.
