Firebreak Selected for DC Environmental Film Festival & Capital City – Watch the First Sneak Peek!

We’re proud to share that our feature documentary Firebreak has been selected to screen at the DC Environmental Film Festival (DCEFF) in Washington, D.C., from March 20–29, 2025, and at the Capital City Film Festival in Lansing, Michigan, from April 2–12, 2025.

Directed and produced by Blue Chalk Executive Producer Kenzie Bruce, Firebreak tells the inspiring story of Brandon Smith and Royal Ramey, two men who met fighting wildfires while incarcerated in California. After beginning their own careers as professional firefighters, they co-founded The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP) to help others like them break through systemic barriers and enter the fire service.

To celebrate this announcement, we’re excited to share the first sneak peek of Firebreak. Watch it here.

“We’re honored to have Firebreak included in these festival lineups,” says Kenzie Bruce. “Brandon and Royal’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, environmental justice, and the need for systemic change and we think it will resonate powerfully with audiences.

Firebreak will screen at DCEFF on Tuesday, March 25, at The Miracle Theater, alongside a conversation with the filmmakers moderated by Rev. Lennox Yearwood, President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus. Tickets can be purchased here.

Firebreak will close out Capital City as the festival’s Closing Night Feature presented by Nation Outside—a powerful grassroots organization led by formerly incarcerated advocates. The screening will take place on Saturday, April 12, at Central United Methodist Church. Tickets can be purchased here.

Screening times and ticket information for DCEFF will be available soon. Stay updated at firebreakfilm.com.
