"Covering Their Tracks,” is a documentary podcast miniseries made in collaboration with Tablet, the premier destination for smart and entertaining Jewish audio content.
The show tells the extraordinary story of a young man’s escape from a moving train bound for the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust, and his fight to hold the French national rail company, the SNCF, accountable for their actions as they later bid for lucrative high-speed rail contracts in the United States.
Across five episodes — the first of which were released to coincide with International Holocaust Remembrance Day — “Covering Their Tracks” shares the tale of Leo Bretholz, a young Jewish man who, after three years on the run, was loaded onto an SNCF cattle car headed for Auschwitz in November 1942. Just hours before reaching the German border, Bretholz jumped from the moving train, a daring act that saved his life.
Decades after transporting 76,000 Jews and many others toward concentration camps, the SNCF and its affiliated companies began seeking high-speed rail and other lucrative contracts across the United States. This inspired Bretholz, who was then living in Maryland, to lead a campaign to seek an apology and restitution from the SNCF. This podcast pieces together how survivors like Bretholz went from a French cattle car bound for certain death to the treaty room of the U.S. State Department — and all the people they had to convince along the way.
