Living City: Where Does Our Trash Go?
Sept. 25, 2014 : With The New York Times
The NewsDox unit of BlueChalk produced the Living City series in collaboration with The New York Times video department and metro desk. The six-part series looks at a range of major New York city and state infrastructure projects, from subways to waterways, waste management to steam systems.
“Living City: Where Does Our Trash Go?” explores the story of how New York disposed of its trash over the last century and what plans the city has for managing its waste stream in the 21st. New Yorkers produce 10,000 tons of trash a day, 85 percent of which is hauled to landfills in Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Ohio. However, the city intends to reduce its reliance on landfills and make recycling of both inorganic and organic waste a much greater part of the future, says Kathryn Garcia, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Sanitation.
The Living City series is the first major initiative to come from NewsDox, a division of Blue Chalk Media designed to report and produce visual journalism with news organizations and knowledge brands.
